Sažetak
Historic agreement between Ban Ki-moon and Tomas Bach The importance of the International Olympic Committee is of utmost importance for the Olympic movement and sports, however, the role of the IOC - or rather, the role of Olympism and sports - does not stop only at sports events, but extends to other social activities and areas as well. It is especially important to evaluate and highlight these, additional values that the IOC is promoting in the society, the values that are becoming ever more accepted and recognized. In 1993 the General Assembly of the UN adopted a resolution on further - even stronger – cooperation of these two organizations, the IOC and the UN, creating thus the path for the creation of another important action called the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. This way, the UN adopted the revival of ancient Greek tradition Ekecheirie, the ancient Olympic truce, which represents the very foundation of actions of the IOC since its establishment in 1894 and clear wish of the founder of the modern Olympic movement, Pierre de Coubertin, who was trying to turn the Olympic Games into a forum for promotion of harmony among individuals and nations. According to the provisions of the General Assembly of the UN, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace will take place on April 6th each year with the goal to draw attention to the importance of sports and physical activity both for the individuals and nations and for the economic, educational and cultural development of a country and prevention of all forms of discrimination in the society. International Day of Sport for Development and Peace represents an invitation and a significant step in the acceptance of sports not only as an activity that has the power necessary for introduction of positive values into the societies, but also – according to Jacques Rogge - “the activity with an important role in building a better and more peaceful world”. His words came true in a form of historic agreement between the UN and the IOC, signed on April 28th this year by Ban Ki-moon and Thomas Bach at the UN headquarters in New York with the goal of creating a more peaceful world and encouraging positive social changes through sports.
