Patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis (OA) have a relatively high incidence of depression. These individuals suffer from both physical pain and emotional pain having lost the ability to perform activities they once enjoyed and the level of mobility they once had. Los of mobility, function and independence can all contribute do developing depression. OBJECTIVES: to investigate some pain characteristics, functional disability, depression and anxiety in patients with osteoarthritis and relations between observed variables. Subjects were 50 osteoarthritis patients, 43 female and 7 male, average age 64 years (42-79). Results on short Melzack-McGill Questionnaire showed higher average pain intensity of sensory pain qualities than Oboljeli od OA pri procjeni kvalitete boli, veće procjene daju senzornim nego afektivnim kvalitetama, doživljavaju relativno visok intenzitet boli, anksioznost se kreće između blage I umjerene, a depresivnost je niska, I imaju relativno dobru funkcionalnu sposobnost. Higher education was related to lower pain intensity and lower affective qualities of pain. Patients with more pain were also more depressed, anxious, and more functionally disabled. Correlation between depression and anxiety was significant. Functional ability was the best predictor of anxiety and depression.
