Sažetak
Corridor No. 5 plays a significant role in connecting the Baltic through Corridor No. 4, Russia and Ukraine, trough Corridors 9 and 3 with the Adriatic coast. The Adriatic ports represent the shortest path to the Suez Canal and the North African coast.
From the aspect of the Republic of Croatia, access to the Adriatic has been foreseen in the Harbour of Rijeka, Corridor 5b, and joint interest of the Republics of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina is the Harbour of Ploče in Corridor 5c. The significance of this corridor lies in the valorisation of the Northern Adriatic ports Venice, Trieste, Kopar and Rijeka, representing the interest and requirements of certain regions of the Western and a greater part of Central Europe. The European Community and its member Italy and the member candidates such as Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia also have a need to construct road networks, because the junction Budapest connects Corridor 5 to the Northern Corridors 1 and 6, thus allowing for an alleviation and ecological protection of the roads in the Western Europe, especially regarding integral and intermodal transport related to maritime and land transportation.
The paper analyses the social, economic, and technical aspects of Corridor No. 5, along with maps, graphic and numeric presentations of the current and planned transport routes. Significant emphasiss is on the environmental protection and a more evenly distributed traffic throughout the European Continent, especially with regard to freight destined for the Mediterranean, the Near and Far East.
