Sažetak
This paper deals with the most common challenges of dealing with the phonological level of song translation from English to Croatian: masculine rhyme on a downbeat and the necessity of rhythmic alterations. Based on a corpus of existing Croatian song translations, the problematic aspects of these challenges were analyzed, and several possible solutions were presented for each of them. In general, the solutions in these existing translations support Low's 'pentathlon principle ': where achieving a "perfect" translation is not feasible, a decision is made about which lexical and musical aspects of the source text are most important to preserve and which may be given up in the target text. Thus, regarding rhyme, a translator can decide between limiting their word choices to achieve perfect rhyme and using near rhyme in order to achieve better semantic accuracy in the translation. When it comes to rhythm, small adjustments in the music may be made to fit the target text, but it is preferable that the original rhythmic pattern is retained if it is deemed vital to the flow of the song. It can thus be concluded that Low's 'pentathlon principle' both systemizes the current practice and establishes guidelines for future song translations.
