Sažetak
The unfavourable living conditions in the Dinaric karst have since ancient times forced humanity to perform different interventions, mainly by building hydrotechnical structures. At the very beginning of their development many of them had completed positive expectations. After a few decades (in some cases earlier) unexpected and negative consequences occurred. Commonly, the benefit resulting from the most of these structures was smaller than the damage they caused. Karst is an extremely vulnerable system. Anthropogenic interventions in karst regions may disrupt the natural ecological equilibrium. They may cause redistribution in karst aquifers and catchments, which affect processes of water circulation at the local or regional scale in a strong, sudden and dangerous manner. There are many frequent consequences of such changes as for example: (1) occurrence of floods and landslides ; (2) collapse of dolines ; (3) regional water redistribution ; (4) drying up of karst springs and rivers ; (5) conflicts over internationally shared aquifers ; (6) pollution of groundwater, etc. This paper presents the most characteristic examples of anthropogenic interventions made in the Dinaric karst, which caused strong changes in hydrological, hydrogeological, ecological and social regimes. The consequences described herein are not restricted to the Dinaric karst. They can appear in other karst regions.
