Sažetak
The rise of the noble family of Alben is closely connected with King Sigismund's (1387-1437) plans to restore the royal authority in the Kingdom of Hungary-Croatia. At the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century members of the Alben family (which probably originated in the Rheinland-Pfalz region) acquired lucrative political offices and ecclesiastical honours from King, and thus became firm pillars of reforms generated by the Royal Court. Career of John Alben, Benedictine monk from Hornbach Abbey, stands out as particularly prosperous. He was an abbot of Cistercian Abbey of Topusko and then a bishop in Veszprém, Pécs and Zagreb. John advanced in the Royal Curia hierarchy too – he governed the Secret Royal Chancery and the Holy Roman Empire Chancery. In this essay, career-pattern of John Alben, who became one of the most influential prelates of the Realm, is analyzed regarding broader political context and King’s efforts to create new political and ecclesiastical elite. John Alben’s career-reconstruction reveals also some generals trends which dominated the relations between the highest Centres of power: the King and the Pope. The application of the King’s right of patronage is the most obvious one – it was the main tool which Sigismund used in his efforts to run the ecclesiastical affairs of the Realm autonomously from the Roman Curia. And finally, special attention is paid to John Alben’s pontificate in Zagreb bishopric, 1421-1433, and his efforts to protect the estates of monastic houses which were facing the earliest Ottoman raids.
