Sažetak
Advancements in neuroscience and neuropharmacology brought us possibilities to affect brain and improve different cognitive and vegetative functions impaired in neurological and psychiatric illnesses. However, healthy individuals are increasingly reaching towards pharmaceuticals that can enhance their cognition, memory and concentration “above normal“. Various substances have been used to transiently improve different aspects of brain function, the most desirable target being concentration and memory, as well as elevation of mood. This brings series of ethical concerns for the individual as well as for the society. Promises of the field and potential improvement of „quality of life“ are suggesting that process of improvement of “normal” will not likely to be influenced by ethical concerns. This possibility calls for examination of the benefits and dangers of pharmaceutical neuroenhancement and consideration of whether, when and how society might intervene to control its uses.
