Sažetak
This study investigated concentrations of nitric oxide in saliva of patients with periodontal disease by measuring its stable metabolite nitrite (NO2). In 25 patients with RPP, 25 with AP and 25 healthy subjects NO2 concentrations were measured in slaiva from sublingual and parotid glands and in total saliva. Patients with RPP had significantly lower NO2 concentrations (mean 2.5; 95% CI 1.1-3.8 mg/l) than those with AP (mean 11.1 ; 95% CI 7.7-14.5 mg/l) or healthy subjects (mean 22.4 ; 95% CI 15.4-29.5 mg/l) (p>0.001). Parotid gland saliva contained less NO2 than sublingual or total. Diet, specifically high NO3 intake, did not influence salivary NO2 concentrations. These data indicate that salivary NO2 is decreased in periodontitis, more so in severe disease types.
