Sažetak
This study is aimed at investigating the structural influence of aromatic pollutants on degradation/mineralization kinetics and biodegradability and toxicity changes during photooxidative treatment of simulated wastewater. In that purpose six mono-substituted aromatics are degraded by UV/H2O2 process. The combined influence of substituent type and UV/H2O2 process parameters on degradation kinetics of chosen aromatics was investigated using response surface methodology (RSM). It was determined that studied aromatics obey first-order degradation kinetics. Degradation rate constants (kobs) were correlated with process and structural parameters by RSM models ; analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated model's high accuracy (R2=0.943, p<0.0001) and showed that structural features significantly influenced degradation rates. Mineralization kinetics was also influenced by structural features of studied aromatics through the competitive degradation of vast array of formed aromatic and aliphatic by-products. According to the obtained results, it was concluded that the changes in biodegradability and toxicity profiles during the treatment are the consequence of structurally influenced degradation pathways.
