Sažetak
Different ways of assessment and self-assessment of health provide data with different prognostic validity. The differences may be attributed not only to the assessment method, but to the social and demographic characteristics of the subjects as well. Self-assessment of health could be providing useful and independent information, which predict mortality of elderly persons, thus enabling some prevention of mortality risks.
The aim of this research was to investigate the association between different health indicators (health status, self-assessment of health, health behaviour, somatic symptoms, functional ability) and mortality in elderly persons in Croatia.
The subjects were 440 persons who participated in the Epidemiological Study of Ageing in Zagreb, Croatia in 1979 (Defilipis and Havelka, 1984). The sample of this research consisted of all the subjects from the original sample for whom certified data on death were provided during the 15 years follow-up. Sociodemographic and health assessment data were collected by survey.
Correlations were calculated and survival analyses performed. Results showed diffrerent prognostic validity of each health indicator. The best predictor of mortality was functional ability followed by health behaviour. Sociodemographic variables affected the prognostic validity of each predictor of mortality.
