Sažetak
Education about sun protection is one of the major goals in public health care. The Sun is essential for life, but it is well known that unprotected and over exceeded sun exposure leads to premature skin aging and skin cancer. Therefore, daily sun protection should become a wise necessity. Individuals should be encouraged to control the level of sun exposure and avoid cumulative sun damage to their skin. Sun protection campaigns have been developed throughout the world. In Australia, the sun protection program has started 20 years ago and until today the program brought many changes in the society's approach to the sun. This program resulted in marked reduction in sun exposure and increased use of skin self-examination. In 1999 Laboratories Vichy started a sun protection campaign in Spain, which was named “Sun Prevention Center”. The goal of the campaign was to educate people about the harmful effects of UV-radiation and over-exceeded sun exposure and about different methods of sun protection. Since then, the Sun prevention campaign has been realized in 25 countries worldwide. In 2002 the sun prevention campaign started in Croatia and Slovenia in cooperation with the Croatian and Slovene dermatovenerological Societies. The Sun Prevention Centers were constructed in 7 cities. During the four-year period, since 2002 till 2005, 4387 people visited our Sun Prevention Centers. Visitors answered questionnaires about their behavior during sun exposure, skin characteristics and photo type. Dermatologists and pharmacists educated visitors about the harmful effects of the UV- radiation and the benefits of the proper sun protection. The Sun Prevention Center had a strictly educational nature and the only goal was to raise the public's awareness of the dangerous effects and consequences of over exceeded sun exposure.
