Sažetak
Background: The aim of this research was to determine whether the implementation of nursing documentation affects the patient care, and to identify the possible positive and negative effects of such practice in the ICU. Methods: The research was conducted using a questionnaire which consisted of 17 questions. The data was analyzed using statistical methods and content analysis, and presented as percentage values. Respondents included 52 randomly selected nurses with different level of education and from different parts of Croatia. Results: 60% of the respondents have confirmed using nursing care plans in their ICU units. 90% of the participants stated that the nursing documentation process decreases the overall time spent with the patient. The fact that patient data is being duplicated in two or more places within the nursing documentation has been reported by 85% of the participants. Discussion: Recent similar studies indicate that 73, 3% of the nurses believe that the time spent with the patient is shortened, as a result of the implementation of nursing documentation (Ljubičić, 2010.). Conclusion: The results indicate that the nursing documentation process is becoming deeply integrated in the everyday care for the ICU patients. Despite the overall tendencies to increase the usage of modern technology in contemporary nursing, the documentation is still mostly written by hand, which increases the amount of time spent documenting and consequently shortens the time spent with the patient. More than half of the respondents stated that the nursing care plans are used in planning nursing care, but the necessary evaluation of nursing care is usually not being carried out afterwards. Key words: documentation - standardization - nurse - attitude – ICU.
