Sažetak
The specificities of labor and employment in creative industries are based on the communication of experiences through symbolic production (Hesmondhalgh and Baker, 2011). The contradiction between creativity and the market orientation is inscribed in the productivity type as well as in the organizational contexts of the creative industries. The type of creative labor and employment is by definition atypical and non-standard (Edgell, 2006), with elements of non-paid work and under-employment, and with long-term temporal and financial investment into various skills and expertise. These labor types, with the reproduction of the already present and some emergent class and gender inequalities (Hesmondhalgh, 2002), are hindering the sustainability and durability of the creative careers, especially for women (McRobbie, 2002). In this paper the career paths of young women in the creative industries are being analyzed on the basis of research conducted in 2008 in South-East Europe and 2010-2011, 2013 in Croatia, through the concept of professional project (Witz, 1992). The results show the over-presence of non-paid, under-paid and self-exploitative labor, which is differently defined by female creative workers depending on their career development phase. At the beginning of their career, this kind of work is considered as a choice, since female creative workers value getting a job and work experience as more important. With the development of the career, non-paid, under-paid and self-exploitative labor becomes increasingly present and is now seen as a necessity. After a few years of intensive work, female creative laborers feel the consequences in the quality of life that result in dissatisfaction with the career choice. This dissatisfaction further continues into the plan for changing or leaving the profession completely, which confirms how problematic the sustainability of female careers in creative industries is.
