Sažetak
Due to changing role of women in the labor market, gender differences and diversity have been among one of the extensively studied topics in work and organizational literature. However, conducted studies have not adequately investigated the relationship among gender and different work design characteristics. This paper presents results of the empirical research regarding the nature of work characteristics of 661 men and 596 women across four occupational groups (managers, professionals, clerical staff, and manual workers). Data analysis revealed that gender differences in work design do almost not exist within occupational groups. Both men and women have similar job opportunities, at least from the work design perspective. We have found significant differences in the nature of work between men and women only for clerical staff. However, our theoretical assumptions and empirical findings offer contributions to both gender and work design research domain. By observing homogeneous occupational groups, we have recognized specific work design practices and offered new insights in how gender influences can be incorporated into work organization and design decisions.
