Sažetak
The aim of this study was to determine changes of salivary calcium and magnesium in different medical conditions. The literature search with keywords „saliva, calcium, magnesium“ was reached through PubMed website (US National Library of Medicine, National Institute of Health) and included limits on humans and published in the last 10 years. A total of 43 published studies reported measurements of salivary calcium and magnesium and other salivary minerals as well. Among those, there were 18 studies that have found significant correlations of salivary calcium and/or magnesium with different medical conditions. Salivary calcium and magnesium were significantly changed in patients with prolonged surgical procedures (both elevated), patients with oral cancer (both elevated), children with chronic kidney disease (Ca elevated, Mg decreased), patients with sialolithiasis (Ca elevated, Mg decreased), and smokers with chronic periodontitis (both elevated). Salivary calcium was significantly elevated (without salivary magnesium disturbances) in patients with oral submucous fibrosis, Sjogren's syndrome and menopausal women with oral dryness. Salivary magnesium was changed (without salivary calcium disturbances) in patients with oral suppuration and parotid gland tumors (elevated), in glossopyrosis and in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (decreased). The data for diabetic patients and HIV-positive patients were not consistent. There is a need for high quality clinical research on salivary calcium and magnesium, to determine potential clinical significance of these changes in different medical conditions.
