Sažetak
The paper deals with the prophecies and apocalyptic topoi related to the appearance of a force that came ‘from the end of the world’. The primary material analyzed includes the writings of Matthew Paris, first-hand accounts of invasion by Thomas of Spalato and Roger of Apulia, and the reports of the missionaries to the East. Immediate pre-invasion spiritual atmosphere has been re-created, as well as the immediate aftermath of the meeting the Other, when the setting of the contact moved east: with the missionaries on their way to Karakorum, and the Crusaders contacts with the Mongols and the Mamluks in the Near East
