Sažetak
Only recently has research into image metaphors, which were initially restricted to poetry (Lakoff 1987a), come to the forefront of linguistic enquiry. Research results emphasize that this kind of conceptual mapping, which refers to mapping conventional mental images onto other conventional mental images by virtue of their internal structure (Lakoff 1987b, Lakoff and Turner 1989), has an important role in the generation of conventional terminology (Faber and Linares 2004 ; Ureña and Faber 2010, 2012, 2013, Caballero 2003a, 2003b, 2006). It was initally assumed that image metaphors were restricted to visual sense. However, besides visual sense, linguists have only recently started exploring the role of kinaesthetic, somaesthetic and haptic sense in relation to mental imagery in greater detail (Gibbs 2006, Gibbs and Coltson 2006, Popova 2005) even though its importance for cognition was evidenced in earlier research (Revesz 1950, Zimler and Keenan 1983, Kerr 1983). Therefore, the article is aimed at exploring the role of image metaphors in the generation of meaning in noun-noun terminological compounds in civil engineering and architecture, as well as offer a more refined typology of image metaphors that relies on visual, kinesthetic senses, somaesthetic and haptic sense. In that way the article is a possible refinement of the Grady's distinction (1999) between image and behaviour metaphors. We take a cognitive-oriented approach to terminology analysis that is grounded in theoretical prerequisites from Cognitive Linguistics (Lakoff 1993, Lakoff and Johnson 1980, Lakoff 1987, Lakoff and Turner 1989, Gibbs 1994, Grady 1999), Terminology (Temmerman 2000, Cabré 2000, 2003 ; Faber 2013) and framework for noun-noun compound analysis as expounded by Benczes (2006).
