Sažetak
Most cities around the world are trying to achieve modal shift in favour of transport modes which are more rational in terms of economy, space and environment. Public transport, especially public surface transport, is the framework of public mass transit in cities. Besides the external costs acceptable to the community, the encouragement for using public transport has a negative impact on the risk of traffic accidents. As the surface transit (bus and tram) takes place on the road infrastructure used by other traffic participants, the risk of traffic accidents increases with road usage. This paper analyses the safety of both urban road traffic and public surface transport in the City of Zagreb. A comparative analysis of safety performance indicators and road transport databases draws conclusions about the indicators and the safety itself. This paper additionally provides the guidelines for safety performance indicators in order to reduce the number of traffic accidents which will result in bringing the road safety to a higher level in accordance to the National Program on Road Safety in Croatia.
