Sažetak
Colostrum is the milk from the sow which is secreted immediately after farrowing. It contains minerals, vitamins, fat, functional proteins, and as the most important ingredient immunoglobulins. They renew and strengthen immunological functions and are the carriers of passive immunological protection. Its high quality is of extreme importance, due to its effect on the health of the newly farrowed piglets. The intention in intensive pig farming today is to increase the number of piglets per farrow and the number of live piglets after weaning. When achieving that goal it is necessary to increase the quantity of colostrum and improve its composition. One of the ways is the application on transgenic technology. Breeding transgenic pigs which produce bovine α-lactalbumin in their mammary glands will result in the increase in the production of milk for the piglets and the improvement of its quality. There is research on the influences of the insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF1) on the growth and the health of the piglets, which is related to the elevated concentration of it in colostrum. The number of farrows and the genotype influence the composition and the quantity of colostrum a sow can provide. Other factors that influence the composition and the quantity of colostrum are the endocrine status of the sow, feeding, composition of the food, and environmental factors.
