Sažetak
This study investigates repetition in English and Croatian conversations of native speakers of Croatian and non-native speakers of English. The author analyses repetition in the conversations of first year university students of English. The subject group consisted of four volunteers, two females and two males. For every participant four different speech events of about 15 minutes were audiotaped. The participants engaged in two casual, dyadic conversations - one in English and one in Croatian - first with one partner and then with another partner. The first two conversations were taped consecutively. The second two conversations were taped an hour later. The participants were asked to talk as naturally as possible about a casual topic of their choice. The study investigates the frequency, forms and functions of repetition in English and Croatian conversations. A quantitative analysis of the gathered data was made to identify the occurrence, types, and functional distribution of repetitions in Croatian and English conversations. Discussion is based on the comparison of the findings. Implications for further research are mentioned in the conclusive part of the paper.
