Sažetak
An approach which scientifically researches tourism has a long tradition in the Croatian territory. After the economist Robert Glücksmann started Archiv für Fremdenverkehr as a periodical publication of his Tourism Research Institute at the end of the 1920s in Berlin, tourism gets its technical and scientific documentation base in the very south of Croatia – in Dubrovnik. Systematic and scientific approach to tourism enabled the founding of Dubrovnik’s archive on tourism (1938), the only one in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and among leading European institutions. The Archive’s activity was threefold: archival, historical and publishing. Therefore, in the tumultuous years before the Second World War, it was in isolated Dubrovnik that the value of investing in research of prosperous tourism activities was recognized. Researching, collecting, storing, processing and issuance of tourist material was made possible and today it represents an extremely valuable resource and starting point for further research. By investigating the archive records and the relevant literature, this paper explores the rich history of Dubrovnik tourist activity through its archives for tourism ahead of the start of World War II. Such an investigative plunge into the past of Croatian tourism, particularly into the critical periods of European history, clarifies the present-day situation in the tourism industry of the region, thus wisely investing for the future.
