Sažetak
The Central Slovak nominative/accusative neuter singular adjectival ending –ô is unique not only among Slovak dialects, but also within the West Slavic language group. In the absence of old texts, no satisfactory solution has been offered for the problem of its origin. Most scholars have attempted to explain the ending by invoking analogy, whereas others, such as Ľ. Novák, thought that it arose through an uncertain Central Slovak oje > ō contraction. In his 1963 work The Phonological Development of Slovak, E. Pauliny (1912 – 1983) outlined an original solution, connecting the rise of this adjectival ending with the operation of the Rhythmic Law in Central Slovak. According to Pauliny, after the Rhythmic Law began to operate, in indefinite forms of adjectives with a long root vowel the short adjectival ending –o was reinterpreted as a long ending shortened by the Rhythmic Law, and then restored, by analogy, in adjectives with a short root vowel. The paper examines whether this interesting solution works even if we assume a later chronology for the Rhythmic Law.
