Sažetak
Congestion control is essential in packet switching networks to keep optimal network operating point. Temporary congestion, lasting few round trip times, is avoided with flow control feedback loop. Momentary congestion, lasting less than a RTT, can be avoided by traffic shaping. TCP flow control uses packet losses as congestion indication, thus driving the network at the full node queues. Occasional burst of packets can induce unnecessary packet losses and provoke TCP congestion control reaction. In this paper, a simple traffic shaper for TCP is proposed, together with RTT smoothing and shaper tuning methods. Analysis of simulation experiments has shown that the proposed algorithm is efficient in reducing burstness, resulting in overall increase of throughput.
