Sažetak
In this paper we aim to investigate the relation between suffixes used in the derivation of nomina loci in Czech, Slovene and Croatian and the metaphorical and metonymical shifts occurring in words derived by particular suffixes. We were particularly interested whether the suffixes of the same origin and same primary meaning can undergo the same semantic shifts in three different, but genetically related languages. In order to do so, we have firstly collected all nouns derived with all Czech and Croatian locative suffixes from Czech National Corpora and hrWaC, Croatian web corpora. We have thus obtained 202 Czech and 189 Croatian nouns. Locative suffixes in both languages can be roughly divided into two semantic subgroups: suffixes denoting external, open places (Cz. -iště, -isko, -ina ; Cro. - (l)ište, -ik) and suffixes denoting internal, indoor places (Cz. -na, -ovna, -árna, -nice, - ín, -ka ; Cro. -ana, -nica, -ara, -onica, -ak). However, we decided to focus on the derivation of nouns with suffixes -iště in Czech (46 nouns) and suffixes ending in -ište (-lište, - ište) in Croatian (86 nouns), because the nouns derived with them have shown the biggest diversification and the most interesting semantic shifts. Since we delimited the analysis to one particular suffix, we also included the Slovene suffix -išče, with 84 representatives from the Slovene web corpora, sloWaC. Suffix -iště in Czech, -išče in Slovene and suffixes ending in -ište (-lište, -ište) in Croatian are very productive suffixes in the derivation of nomina loci. Nouns with these suffixes can be formed from verbs, nouns and, rarely, adjectives. Nevertheless, most of them are deverbative nouns in all three analyzed languages. Nomina loci with –iště, -išče and – (l)ište usually denote open spaces (e.g. Cz. hřiště, Slo. igrišče, Cro. igralište ‘playground’), but they can also denote indoor places (e.g. Cz. rodiště ‘maternity hospital’), buildings (Slo. župnišče ‘rectory’) or even institutions (Cz. učiliště, Cro. učilište ‘college’), and, rarely, abstract concepts (Cro. tržište ‘market’). However, nomina loci can undergo some metonymical shifts in the process of word-formation. The derivatives can further undergo metaphorical shifts and thus enter into other semantic domains, namely, they can be considered as nouns of cognition (e.g. stanoviště, stajalište ‘view, viewpoint’ ; hlediště, gledišče, gledište ‘view, viewpoint’). We thus divided the obtained nouns from all three languages into semantic subgroups in order to discover: a) types of metonymies in word-formation frequent in their lexicalization, e.g. ACTION FOR LOCATION, LOCATED FOR LOCATION, STATE FOR LOCATION, PART FOR LOCATION, CHARACTERISTIC FOR LOCATION etc. [4, 9, 10] The types of the metonymy in question highly correlate with the POS of the base word, as will be shown ; b) metaphorical shifts of already established nomina loci to other domains ; i.e. the metaphorical expansion of their original locative meaning. In this process we aim to see whether some subtypes of nomina loci are more likely to undergo a particular kind of semantic shift than others and whether the relation between words with a particular suffix and the semantic change applied to them is the same in all three languages. We also tend to show that derivational and cognitive mechanisms appear simultaneously, i.e. that grammar and semantics form a continuum.
