Sažetak
Prospective studies have shown that increased albumin excretion is a risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), but the nature of the association remains unknown. Since 1990 we have been studying two groups of patients: one of 42 NIDDM patients with albuminuria and the other of 42 NIDDM patients without albuminuria (the latter serving as a control group). All the patients were randomized so that there were no important differences in age, sex, duration of diabetes mellitus or risk factors which are generally accepted as the factors influencing the development of atherosclerosis. The aim of our study was to find out whether albuminuria can be considered a marker of the risk factor for the development of macrovascular disease in NIDDM patients. Albuminuria was determined quantitatively in 24- hour urine by the method of nephelometry. Statistical analysis was made by X2 test. Results showed a statistically significant increase (X2 4.56, p<0.05) in macrovascular complications in patients with albuminuria as compared to those without albuminuria at the beginning of our study.
