Sažetak
During the last decades, implantology emerged as the most innovative enrichment in the field of dentistry, with considerable increase still expected in the future. One of the most common and most feared complications occurring in implantology is periimplantitis, which usually leads to implant loss in case it remains untreated.The causes of this disease pattern are complex, and various hypotheses about the development of periimplantitis were proposed, amongst them insufficient oral hygiene, lack of fixed gingiva, and/or overstressed implants. Therapies reach from improved basic hygiene to antibiotics and disinfectant inserts into periimplantar pockets up to ultrasound treatments and laser curettage of inflamed tissues. The main attention, however, should not be placed on therapy, but rather onto an efficient prevention of periimplantitis. Starting from the fact that assembled implants contain hollow spaces, which can be minimised but not prevented at even the most meticulous production, and that their threads holds gaps, the contamination of implant interiors with germs originating from the oral cavity is inevitable. In order to counteract these re- infections we developed a material based on a highly viscous silicone matrix and a bactericidal disinfectant in 1996. Attempts to combat re- infection are described in specialised literature since years, but GapSeal offers a truly effective prevention from periimplantitis now. A good ten years of clinical experience have passed.
