Sažetak
Ethnic dress has been used for ideological and political purposes in Croatia from the mid- nineteenth century up through the early twenty- first century. In the course of history, individual communities have adopted clothes and clothing styles to differentiate themselves from others. Thanks to its distinctive features, dress has acted as an obvious symbol of identity. Only with the appearance of fashion and the acceptance of global fashion tendencies by elite groups from the mid-sixteenth century on did clothing that had previously been worn by all classes come to be understood as folk clothing, that of the nonelite rural population. The “discovery” of folk culture in Croatia toward the end of the eighteenth and during the nineteenth century was related to the national awakening of the peoples living as subjects of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, a phenomenon not recognized at the time. Folk culture became a kind of inventory for the creation of future national symbols. Ethnic dress became important for the members of various social classes in Croatia, who would wear it at certain times as a symbol of their national identity.
