Magnetism is a property of some alloys to amact ferromagnetic substances, i.e. to create a magnetic field around themselves in which magnetic forces act. This investigation was performed in order to examine the strength of magnetic fields in 30 dental surgeries equipped with the apparatus for light polymerization, mixing amalgam, X-ray apparatus, reflectors, etc. The strength of the magnetic field was measured with a portable gaussmeter. Measuring was performed with the apparatus switched on and off and at different revolution speeds. The strength of the field was measured during contact and at distances of 10 and 20 cm from the gaussmeter. Statistical analyses were shown by t-test and Mann-Whitney test. At a disconnected apparatus the strength of the field was 1.2-2.5 mG. The field strength rapidly fell with the distance from the gaussmeter and the influence of the condition of the apparatus was considerably less. The niagnetic field strength of 50-60 Hz, examined in dental surgeries, could be compared with measurements carried out on domestic appliances. Although the results of this investigation showed very low values, further measuring is recommended because the total effects of the magnetic field on the dentist's health are unknown.
