Sažetak
The paper investigates the beginnings of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and its long and valuable tradition of open-air performances. The first idea of a summer festival was related to the festivities celebrating the renovation of the Clock Tower in 1929. Another step towards it was the PEN Congress in 1933 when Gundulićs Dubravka was performed. However, the true beginning of the Festival was Marko Fotezs production of Shakespeares Hamlet in Lovrjenac. Thus, Dubrovnik was reshaped into a hamletfield and Shakespeare became an essential part of the Festival.
