Sažetak
The paper deals with the development and structure of an expert system for the selection of airfoils for wind turbines (WTs) blades. The aim of the expert system is to assist primarily in the design of small WTs. The generation of the criteria for the airfoil selection is presented. The criteria are deduced by considering various operating conditions of small WTs. The statistical overview of small WT design characteristics provided the range of values of dimensionless parameters required for the analysis. The analysis of the blade aerodynamic loading at different wind speeds resulted in generating two sets of criteria: one referring to the blade tip section and the other to the blade root section. Multiple criteria decision-making method is incorporated in the expert system providing for the hierarchical ranking of airfoils. Running of the expert system engine is tested using data from the expert system database with fifty airfoils. The best ranked airfoils are used in the simulation of WT wind speed-power characteristic with the prescribed diameter and span wise distribution of airfoil chord. WTs are ranked with respect to their power-wind speed characteristics and their ranking agrees well with the one of the airfoils used in WT simulations.
