Sažetak
The German language was once, until the First World War, “one of three worldwide scientific languages” (Ammon 2008: 25). However, as Ammon puts it, “this position has deteriorated step by step during the course of the 20th century” (2008: 25). With English becoming a global language and after the First and Second World War, German started losing its position as a language of science and as international language to a very large extent. Today it is still an important international language, but it seems English has gained dominance in almost all domains. Although English today seems to be the most important and needed language, there are still students choosing to study German over English. The present paper reports on the first study conducted into the attitudes of the students of German toward the English and the German language. A questionnaire-based study was carried out, the aims of which were to examine: (1) why the participants decided to study German and why they perceived studying German as important ; (2) whether the participants ever thought about studying English and whether they thought it was important to study English ; (3) whether they would have studied English instead of German or combined with it ; (4) how the participants perceived the importance of the knowledge of German and English to achieve certain goals, e.g. to find a job, to show their education, to use the Internet, to have a rich social life, etc. ; (5) how the participants described the two languages ; (6) whether the participants perceived themselves to be more competent in English or German ; and, finally, (7) whether the participants thought that English posed a threat to the development/spread of the German language.
