Sažetak
Sunja is a traditional village possesing all the elements of a regional rural environment to the southeast of Zagreb. The region represents some of the best examples of rural wooden architecture in Croatia. During the homeland war Sunja was subjected to prolonged and savage destruction. Reconstruction of destroyed and damaged homes, of parish church and other public buildings, is now slowly beginning. Development and conservation practice in Croatia has until now neglected preservation and environmental planning in rural areas. No comprehensive data exists for the smaller rural settlements, there is no parallel analysis of cultural and natural values, nor have any preservation studies been undertaken. Reconstruction aims will be clearly defined and realization of these aims will involve a number of changes to the present planning approach. The first is the establishment of conservation studies as the fundamental document for environmental planning in an historical area. These changes will have to be realised in a wider frame of national legislation, personnel will have to be trained and professional teams created to ensure the realisation of post-war reconstruction projects.
