Sažetak
This paper investigates the influence of global crisis on the Croatian financial system, with a special focus on insurance market. The Croatian financial system, strongly bank based, has so far proved to be stable and liquid, despite macroeconomic weaknesses such as extremely high foreign debt, deficit of balance of payments and import dependence. Insurance sector in Croatia, an important segment of the financial system, is exposed to the global crisis on, at least, two levels. Firstly, the financial crisis has reduced the economic growth and a fall in insurance demand is likely to be expected during the recession. Secondly, investment portfolios are exposed to all risks characteristic for capital markets and this represents the biggest challenge for Croatian insurance institutions.
