Sažetak
The big sedge species, Carex randalpina B. Walln., was found in Croatia. It was established in 16 localities in valleys of the Krapina river and its tributaries in the northwest part of the country. For the first time it was located (discovered) 2006 and since then it is every year continuously monitored on several localities where it grows in stable populations. The species mostly appears in natural wet habitats in the form of dense open stands or rarely on fringes of lowland forests. Stands in shallow terrain depressions, in moist habitats, without woody species, were described as the association Filipendulo ulmariae-Caricetum randalpinae Stančić 2009. In the syntaxonomical hierarchy the association belongs to marshland vegetation of the class Phragmito-Magnocaricetea Klika in Klika et Novák 1941. From the standpoint of nature conservation Carex randalpina could be considered as a potentially threatened. Reasons are: relatively small number of known localities in Croatia and in Central Europe, small populations in northwest Croatia, regulating of water courses, abandonment of mowing i.e. traditional agriculture and devastation of habitats under anthropogenic influence.
