Sažetak
Skin barrier function can be assessed by measuring trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) (inside-outside barrier) or percutaneous penetration of a model compound (outside-inside barrier). In the clinical studies, measurment of TEWL is more common due to is simplicity and non-invasiveness. TEWL measures the outward diffusion of water through the skin and evaporation into the ambient air. Increase in TEWL reflects an impairment of the water barrier which can be damaged by chemical and physical insults or pathological conditions. TEWL is influenced by a number of intrinsic (such as age and anatomical body site) and environmental factors (such as relative humidity, air and probe temperature) or device models. The aim of this presentation is to give basic insight into common bioengineering techniques, and demonstrate measurement of TEWL and skin hydration.
