Sažetak
This study examines the size structure (> 10 um, micro; 2-10 um, nano; < 2 um, picoplankton) of phytoplankton biomass and productivity in relation to the vertical structure in coastal and open sea areas of the middle Adriatic. In the coastal water biomass and primary production the most abundant were microplankton while the nano- and picoplankton were lower in numbers. An inverse relationship was observed between the percentages of picoplankton and total biomass (chlorophyll a). On the other hand, microplankton showed a decreasing trend with increasingly oligotrophic conditions.
