Sažetak
Aim To compare the antimicrobial action of hydrodynamic irri- gation techniques: sonic activated irrigation, passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), laser activated irrigation (LAI), and RinsEndo sys- tem, on intracanal Enterococcus faecalis . Methodology Root canals of 100 human extracted teeth were instrumented with rotary ProTaper files, sterilized in plasma, con- taminated with E. faecalis , and incubated for 7 days. Sterilization control was performed in six samples. The pattern of colonization was visualized by scanning electron microscopy on four samples. The remaining 90 samples were randomly distributed into four experimental groups ( n = 20 each): I: sonic activated irrigation by EndoActivator for 60 s ; II: PUI by Piezon Master 400 for 60 s ; III: LAI by Er, Cr:YSGG (1.25W, 20 Hz) for 4 9 5 s ; IV: RinsEndo system for 60 s, and positive control group ( n = 10), which was rinsed with saline solution. 2.4% NaOCl was used as an irrigant. Root canals were sampled by flushing the canals with saline before and after the procedures, serially diluted and cultured. The number of bacteria in each canal was determined by plate count. The presence of E. faecalis in root canals was proven with poly- merase chain reaction. Results The reduction in the number of colony forming units after the treatment protocol was highly significant for all groups ( P < 0.001), and were significantly superior over the positive con- trol group ( P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the effectiveness between the four experimental groups ( P > 0.05). Sonic activated irrigation, PUI and RinsEndo succeded in the complete eradication of E. faecalis in six samples, and LAI in nine samples. Conclusions The tested hydrodynamic irrigation techniques were equally efficient in reducing intracanal E. faecalis population.
