Sažetak
The notions of space and rhythm in figurative arts, developed within the German research of the second half of the 19th century on aesthetics, enter through diverse channels into a pre-soviet Russia, to quickly become one of the principal themes of research for artists, architects and art historians. The essay explores the first theoretical work (Rhythm in architecture, 1923) of Moisej Ginzburg, one of the central figures of russian constructivism. The topics of space and rhythm become for Ginzburg the sources for a new definition of the aeshtetic value of architectural. Ginzburg’s redefinition of architectural language, style and object is analyzed within a wider context of the development of the European architectural culture from the last decades of the XIX century onwards: in particular the influences of Heinrich Wölfflin, August Schmarsow, Cornelius Gurlitt, the italian and russian futurism.
