Sažetak
The evermore developed awareness of the importance of protecting biological diversity gives natural history museums an important role in the preservation of the natural historical cultural heritage of a given country. In the natural history museums, staff members systematically collect and preserve, professionally and scientifically study and exhibit natural history objects. Pursuant to the Strategy and Action Plan for the Protection of Biological and Landscape Diversity of the Republic of Croatia (OG 143/08) and the Regulations of the on Content and Manner of Keeping Museum Documentation about Museum Material (OG 108/02), natural history museums have an indispensable role in carrying out the processing, preserving and scientific processing and management of collections is within the standards of the museum and natural history disciplines. Natural history collections are a movable cultural property, and are defined by the law concerning the Protection and Preservation of Cultural Properties (OG 25/12) and Directive 3911/92 of the European Commission. Natural history museums cannot be considered either entirely cultural or entirely scientific establishments, but cultural- and-scientific institutions. It could be very harmful to exclude either of these activities, not only for the museums, but for the science and culture of the nation. The objective of this paper is to comment on the applicability of the recent knowledge about the methodology of ascertaining the systematic positions of species, their museological treatment and preservation and to review he recent condition and problems related with water beetles (suborder Polyphaga) in the various collections within the holdings of the Croatian Natural History Museum. After a detailed overview of museum objects of water beetles in the CNHM holdings, it can be concluded that the collections analysed do constitute valuable museum objects of water beetles collected from sites that are today exposed to powerful anthropogenic impacts or have even vanished. In a scientific sense, the museum collections are a base for comparative research into the fauna of some area. Since a museum collection is a live creation that is constantly being changed and supplemented according to the standards of the fundamental scientific discipline. This will make the jobs of some future museum professionals and scientists much easier.
