Sažetak
The wireless access to the Internet which is used today is slow and second-generation wireless systems are inefficient at handling high data traffic, in particular IP traffic. Hence, mobile network operators will soon have to choose their migration paths toward the third-generation wideband systems. In this paper the choice of an appropriate migration path for the wireless technology towards a European Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) is presented, as well as requirements applying to this system. The paper describes several options of evolution paths, all of which support a seamless transition from present digital wireless network, GSM to UMTS. It also highlights the evolution of the existing air-interface standards.
