Sažetak
Language exposure, more precisely, the quantity and quality of language input are important factors in learning foreign languages (Wong 2005, VanPatten 2003). When a target language is a less- widely taught language, such as Croatian, the lack or limitations of language exposure is often an important issue in foreign language teaching, especially at beginner level. The language learners are often exposed only to one speaker of the language, i.e. the language instructor, therefore the opportunities to communicate with native speakers are limited, as well as the opportunities for developing listening and reading skills in an authentic context. This paper deals with the use of information and communication technology (ICT) for the purpose of increasing the quality, quantity and diversity of language input for novice learners of Croatian in two different learning contexts: in an intensive university face-to- face course and in an online course (Cvikic, Bosnjak, Kolakovic 2012 ; Cvikic, Kanajet-Simic 2012). It will be discussed how the same ICT tools (Skype, Google chat, Hotpotatoes, e-mail communication) are used in two different learning contexts (face- to-face vs. online course) to enhance the language input and foster the authentic usage of language. It will also be explained how the usage of particular Moodle modules (Nanogong, Games, PoodLL) can help in overcoming the lack of physical contact and classroom interaction in online language courses as well as improve the quality of language teaching and learning.
