Sažetak
This article presents the importance of SMEs in the Croatian economy with emphasis on business results during the crisis started in 2008. The worst performance of the SME sector occurred in 2010 when it realized financial loss as a result of a global recession impact in combination with internal weaknesses. The text explains the basic macroeconomic framework and highlights the barriers for stronger SMEs development. SMEs who employed 66% of Croatian labour force contribute the most to overcome the unemployment as one of the main problems of Croatian economy. In addition, the paper identifies social problems faced by the SME sector arising due to entrepreneurship out of necessity. For further development of SMEs in Croatia, it is necessary to improve labour market efficiency, ensure macroeconomic stability and change the negative perception of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship that stems from the perceived corruption and privatization controversies.
