Sažetak
These Proceedings present a collection of papers delivered at an international scholarly conference “Musical Theatre as High Culture? Discourse on Opera and Operetta during the Late 19th Century“ held in Zagreb in 2006. The conference was organized by the Croatian Musicological Society, and it was one among several scholarly meetings organized between 2005 and 2008 by members of the international project “Die Oper im Wandel der Gesellschaft. Die Musikkultur europäischer Metropolen im 'langen' 19. Jahrhundert” which took place in Berlin, Florence, Budapest, Vienna and Lviv respectively. In the papers presented here, various phases of nineteenth-century musical theatre which combined high and popular modes of culture are analysed: these include the impact of political and historical elements on theatrical production, as well as the socio-historical dismension of operatic production and its architectonic and visual elements. The following themes are also explored: the concept of repertories ; the presentation of national aspirations and their relation to international practice ; the adaptation of ideas, personnel, projects, cultural models and repertories to new circumstances ; the reception of domestic and foreign works ; the education of both the audiences and the performing artists. The interdisciplinary approach of the contributors to this volume, which draws on the history of culture, literature, medicine, sociology and musicology, is supported by an analysis of parallels, paradigms and statistics relevant to the subject as a whole. This volume publishes research from Ireland, England, the U.S.A., France, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, as well as from countries in the former Habsburg Empire (Bohemia, Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia). Throughout the course of this research, a number of similarities with regard to the function of high and popular modes of musical culture in different countries emerged. The results of this research, together with the methodologies employed in order to generate it, promote the possibility of further work along similar lines.
