Sažetak
INTRODUCTION: Controversy continues in the area of epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, and management of temporomandibular disorder, especially since these disorder rarely occur as single entities but rather as multiple problems with overlapping signs and symptoms.
AIM OF WORK: The aim of this work was to determine prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and association between signs and symptoms with morphologic (Angle classification) and functional state of occlusion and psychosocial status in younger population of nonpatient subjects.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Questionnaire which included anamnestic and clinical - functional analysis (Gutowski) was used in examination. All subjects (230) were male in age group from 19 to 28 years old (average value 21.3 years) (Figure 1). Subjects were divided into two groups: group with normal (class I) and group with disturbed (class II/1, class II/2, class III and crossbite) interarch relationships in the intercuspal position (Figure 2).
RESULTS: From the total number of subjects, 44.3% of subjects had at least one sign and 38% of subjects had at least one symptom dysfunction of temporomandibular joints or masticatory muscles. Clinical - functional analysis and established diagnostic criteria have been done, we obtained clinical findings which present that 13 subject (5.7%) had muscle disorder (myalgia), 22 subjects (9.6%) disc displacement with reduction, 45 subjects (19.6%) disc displacement with reduction and myalgia, 30 subjects (13%) tension headache and 3 subjects (1.3%) osteoarthrosis (Table 1). By the calculation of Spearman's correlation rank, a correlation between signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and interarch relationships in the intercuspal position, especially in the group with disturbed interarch relationships (class II/1, class II/2, class III and crossbite), was established. Multivariate discriminant analysis (Table 2) confirmed association between signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and occlusal and psychosocial variables.
CONCLUSION: It could be concluded, that there were synergistic action occlusal and psychosocial (oral parafunctions) variables as etiological factors for development of sign and symptom dysfunction of masticatory system.
