Sažetak
The idea of ‘national’ in Croatian 19th entury music culture shows evolutionary tendencies which can be articulated in four phases. It started as a construct leading towards higher general musical standards (with Vrhovac), continued with pragmatic treatment of music as incidental to the words of rousing songs, supporting non-musical issues (in Gaj), achieved the status of a substantial part of national cultural being (in Kukuljević), and finally, as ethnic/national art music, reached a pedestal of general interest in the homeland and in national education (in Kuhač). Those different phases in their dynamic development fit in various already established general theories of national issue, as stated by contemporary social sciences and international scholarship at large. In this, Croatian specifities offer yet another set of variants within the vast spectrum of the similar phenomena in East Central Europe.
