Sažetak
A review of phenomenological and theoretical observations is presented, concerning the structural, photoemission, and magnetic properties of the superconducting cuprates, with special emphasis on discerning the role of the oxygen degree of freedom. From 1989 to the newest, yet unpublished results, we demonstrate that control of the oxygen degree of freedom enables a consistent and systematic understanding of the setting in which superconductivity occurs. It appears that the relative contributions of oxygen and copper vary along the Fermi surface, with the arc metallicity dominantly oxygen-derived, thus providing a natural explanation for the "arc protection" effect in simple physical terms. Similarly the characteristic rotation of peaks in the magnetic response with energy can be explained with interchanging roles of copper and oxygen sites. We emphasize a number of open questions, concerning the evolution of the intracell charge distribution with doping, and the large particle-hole-symmetry breaking required for successful phenomenologies, but difficult to reconcile with ab initio calculations.
