Sažetak
After the Frankish occupation of Istria the monumental landscape of the region dramatically changed. The new elites were the protagonists of a series of large investments, mostly in churches and fortified castra, displaying different forms (and functions) from those traditional in the province. We witness a building campaign of a large scale in strategic points along the roman road from Trieste to Pula (Dvigrad, Bale, Guran...), as well as on the transversal road from Rovinj to Bale, aside the formation of the new bishopric in Novigrad. After a few decades the old bishoprics in Poreč and Pula were surrounded by Carolingian possessions thus reinforcing the new political situation. The same process has taken place in the former province of Dalmatia a few decades later. After the first wave of diplomatic preparations in the same time and in the same way it happened in Istria, we witness a large scale building activity, connected to the strongholds of the Croatian elites, once again using forms and functions that were not usual in the province.
