Sažetak
My presentation of the CroMe digital database, created by the NGO Documenta - Center for dealing with the past, point out the positive example of promoting reconciliant culture of memory in Croatia and oral history as a legitimate method of revealing the “historical truth”. At a time when the task of dealing with the past is mostly performed by non-governmental organizations, NGOs like Documenta, together with historians, museologists and archivists, are responsible for the ways of collecting and presenting the heritage of war in a manner appropriate to the 21st century. The CroMe digital database with nearly 500 interviews reflecting the experiences of war and violence by Croatian citizens of different age, gender, ethnic and ideological groups, represents a great success of a small group of enthusiasts and volunteers. It also reflects the wish to include Croatian contemporary history into European "master narrative” and to strengthen the integration processes in the present and future.
