Sažetak
One of the basic problems facing all transition economies is the disproportionate balance of payments. Uncoordinated import and export results in current account deficits, greatly influenced by the decreased demands of developed market economies, but also due to the non-adaptability of export products from transition economies. On the other hand, due to an undeveloped capital market and finances and an undeveloped or unstable banking system, direct foreign investment is low in transition economies (with the exception of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland), while the portfolio investment is practically non-existent. Undoubtedly, investment procedures are indispensable towards achieving substantial economic growth in transition economies, and which cannot be attained without engaging both domestic and foreign finance sources. The limitation and inexpert management of domestic sources places foreign capital at the forefront. As has been mentioned, foreign capital has not significantly entered transitional economies over recent years. A frequently stressed prerequisite is precisely an even balance of payments - and we thereby come full circle. The paper analyses the economic movements and balances of payments of transitional countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic and Slovenia) in order to scrutinize Croatia's present position among the aforementioned transitional economies and to indicate which activities need to be undertaken for a higher positioning of the Croatian economy.
