Sažetak
First theatrical plays in Varaždin had been organised within the Jesuit grammar school, at the beginning of the 17th century, whilst public plays had been performed at various venues ever since 1788 up until the construction of the new theatre building in 1873: in the interiors of noblemen’s palaces, at inns and squares. In year 1869 the Varaždin Municipality had decided to fund the construction of an entirely new and contemporarily equipped theatre building. A construction programme had been put together the following year, and a young Viennese architect by the name of Hermann Helmer had won the first prize for his design. Under the requirements of the competition Helmer had designed a building located south to the old city centre that would be multifunctional: in addition to the theatre itself, the building would house a concert hall, restaurant and café, rooms for reading-clubs and a few flats.
